What to Expect at Your First Visit to Pelvic Floor PT

Spoiler alert: It’s not scary — and you get to keep your pants on (if you want to).

Whether you’re coming in for pelvic pain, postpartum recovery, bladder leaks, or constipation, the first visit to pelvic floor physical therapy is often the most intimidating — but it doesn’t have to be. At Practically Perfect Physical Therapy, our goal is to make you feel comfortable, informed, and empowered from the moment you walk through the door.

Let’s break down what to expect.

1. A Warm Welcome — Not a Cold Exam Room

We know how overwhelming medical visits can be. That’s why our clinic doesn’t feel like one. You won’t walk into a sterile, echoey gym with people lifting weights all around you. Instead, you’ll enter a calm, private space designed with comfort and trust in mind. Many of our patients describe it as feeling “like a spa” or “a cozy living room” — which is exactly the vibe we’re going for.

2. We Actually Talk to You (Yes, Really)

You’ll get a full hour with your provider. No rushed 10-minute overview.

We’ll sit down and have a conversation about:

  • Your medical and symptom history

  • Any concerns you have

  • What your goals are

  • What your day-to-day looks like

Nothing is off-limits. In fact, we want you to bring your “TMI” questions — they’re our favorite kind.

3. Movement, Breathing, and Whole-Body Assessments

The pelvic floor is just one part of your body’s story. We’ll look at your posture, breathing mechanics, abdominal strength, hip mobility, and how you move through space.

Sometimes pelvic floor issues stem from areas far beyond the pelvis — so we examine the full picture.

Don’t worry — you don’t need to wear anything fancy. Comfortable clothes you can move in are perfect.

4. Internal Exam? Only If You Want To

Here’s the big question we get all the time:

“Am I going to have an internal pelvic exam?”

Short answer: Only if we both decide it’s helpful and you give informed consent.

We’ll explain everything beforehand using diagrams, models (like our beloved plush uterus), and analogies that actually make sense.

You are never obligated to do anything that makes you uncomfortable. Ever.

5. We Give You a Plan (And Hope)

By the end of your session, you’ll have:

  • A better understanding of your body

  • Practical suggestions you can start using immediately

  • A customized care plan tailored to your goals

  • The chance to ask any lingering questions

Our patients often tell us they feel relieved, validated, and hopeful after their first visit. For many, it’s the first time they’ve felt truly heard.

6. Kid-Friendly and Trauma-Informed, Always

We know life doesn’t stop just because you need PT. Kids are welcome at our appointments, and we create an inclusive, judgment-free zone for all bodies and all stories.

We operate with a trauma-informed approach that centers safety, consent, and collaboration at every step.

You Deserve Care That Listens and Lasts

Pelvic floor issues are common — but they’re not something you have to “just live with.” Whether you’re navigating pregnancy, postpartum, aging, surgery recovery, or chronic symptoms, we’re here for you.
