Why I Started My Practice: A Personal Journey to Practically Perfect
Most people don’t wake up one day and decide to become a pelvic floor physical therapist. And very few think, “You know what sounds fun? Opening a business called Practically Perfect Physical Therapy.”
But for me, the path started when I was just 13 years old — and it began with a burn.
Burned, But Not Broken
When I was a teenager, I suffered a serious burn that landed me in the hospital for 11 days. While the experience was traumatic, it was also transformational. It was during my recovery that I first encountered physical therapy.
Those therapists helped me regain function, confidence, and a sense of control during a time when everything felt scary and out of my hands. At just 13, I made up my mind: I would become a physical therapist and help people feel that same sense of hope and healing.
From Personal Struggle to Professional Calling
Years later, as I grew into young adulthood, I faced another challenge—this time more personal and far less talked about.
Anything involving vaginal insertion was incredibly difficult for me. Tampons, pelvic exams, intimacy — all caused pain and discomfort. And yet, I was constantly told it was “normal” or “just in my head.” I knew something wasn’t right, but no one had answers. I felt alone.
At the time, pelvic floor therapy was very unknown and I had to treat myself with library resources like Cosmopolitan magazines and reading books about physiology in my college library.
I discovered pelvic floor therapy at a physical therapy conference while in college and I finally felt seen, heard, and supported. That experience changed everything. I found resources to help treat myself and find a provider to take my issues seriously.
I knew all about the specialty of pelvic floor therapy but was too scared to do the coursework to work towards specialization. It took me 7 years, having been pregnant and birthing a baby to finally be brave enough to do the training and finally start helping these patients.
At that point in my career, I didn’t just want to be a physical therapist anymore. I wanted to become a pelvic floor therapist so I could offer that same validation and relief to others who felt lost in a system that wasn’t listening.
Creating the Clinic I Wish I’d Had
After working in several clinical settings, I realized I needed more. More flexibility, more patient-centered care, and more opportunities to help families — not just individuals.
So I opened Practically Perfect Physical Therapy with a vision: a welcoming, inclusive, all-in-one space where patients of all ages could get the care and answers they deserve.
In those early days, I thought I’d be lucky to have a few patients trickling in each week. To my surprise, I was fully booked with a waitlist after just two weeks. That confirmed what I already knew deep down: people were desperate for this kind of care.
What We Believe (And Live Out)
Today, our practice is built on the values that have shaped me since childhood:
Evidence-based care: Our team is constantly learning so we can provide the most up-to-date, effective treatments.
Trauma-informed care: We listen first. We believe you. We never push or rush.
Inclusive, accessible support: Everyone deserves to feel comfortable, seen, and safe — whether you’re postpartum, perimenopausal, constipated, confused, or all of the above.
We don’t just treat symptoms. We help people feel whole again.
My Why, In Every Patient
People often ask, “What drives you?”
Honestly, I am my own why. I’ve had multiple experiences throughout my life where physical therapy made me feel empowered, strong, and truly functional again. I want that for every single patient who walks through our door.
At Practically Perfect, we don’t just treat pelvic floors, we treat people. And I’m so grateful to get to do that every day.
